Vikramaditya Motwane directs this black comedy thriller under the banner of Andolan Films. The film was released on April 25, 2020. The story is written by Avinash Sampath, using a film-within-a-film narrative in which the main characters are fictionalized versions of themselves. Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor play the title characters, with Yogita Bihani, Sonam Kapoor, and Harshvardhan Kapoor playing crucial roles.
In 2013, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane conceived of the idea for their film and sent it to Shahid Kapoor for development. The film was initially titled AK vs SK, with Kapoor playing himself in the latter role, but scheduling conflicts caused the film to be shelved in 2016. In late 2019 the project was resurrected with Anil Kapoor instead of Saheed Kapoor and a new script.
Filming took place a couple of months later. AK vs AK debuted as one of Netflix’s highest-rated films in 2020 after an unconventional marketing campaign launched several weeks before its release as an original film on December 24, 2020. Overall, reviews were positive, praising its innovative structure and performances but criticising the lack of a backstory for the main characters and the lacklustre ending.
AK vs AK Storyline The film begins with Yogita, a filmmaker who is looking to make a documentary about Anurag Kashyap. At an event held by MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Images), Sucharita Tyagi speaks with Kashyap and Anil Kapoor. The argument between Kashyap and Kapoor ends with Kashyap throwing water in the face of Kapoor after an audience member questions whether the director or actor is more important in filmmaking. In response to this, many movie personalities cut ties with Kashyap and back out of his projects; as Kashyap sits in his bedroom, enraged, Yogita offers him a proposal to make the film with Kapoor.
Kashyap visits Kapoor’s set along with Yogita on Christmas Eve and his birthday, pitching him a film about an immature director who kidnaps the daughter of an aged actor. When Kapoor realises that Kashyap has abducted his daughter, he is initially uninterested in the story until he realises Kashyap wants to film his natural reactions to Sonam’s disappearance.
Kashyap gives him ten hours (until sunrise the following day) to find her, along with four rules: he cannot get anyone else involved, not call the police, and Yogita’s camera must always be on.
Now the real story of the movie begins. You will love the way Anil Kapoor survived the situation and screamed when he didn’t find the next way out. I got goosebumps when I saw this movie. The film’s story is entirely different from typical Bollywood movies, and the movie’s direction is above the highest level.
