K. Madhu, who directed the first four parts of the CBI film series, returned to direct its fifth instalment, CBI 5: The Brain. S. N. Swami wrote the screenplay for the film, which marks Mammootty’s return to his iconic role as CBI officer Sethurama Iyer. The film also stars an ensemble cast and was produced by Tomichan Mulakuppadam under the banner Mulakuppadam Films.
CBI 5: The Brain: Storyline In the late 1980s, a series of murders rocked Pune. The victims were all young women, who had been found with their heads severed. The police could not solve the case, which became known as the “basket killings”. CBI officer Balagopal narrates this story as one of the most difficult murder investigations of his career. The case was investigated by Sethurama Iyer and his team.
The story forms the crux of CBI 5: Brain, is based on real-life events, it also draws inspiration from many popular crime shows in India that have featured similar cases.
“It’s inspired by some cases like ‘Basket Killings’ and also by some very popular shows like CID,” said director Prashant Nair during an interview.
