The Oxford Dictionary explains the word entertainment as “the action of providing or being offered with enjoyment or amusement”. But movies do a lot more than this. They do much more than just make you happy and content. Good movies move us, educate us and leave us with a mix of feelings and emotions. A movie can have an impact in more than one way.

Anyway, getting back to the movie list.
Here are a few astounding movies that will make you think, and most certainly inspire you to take a fresh look at life:
Into The Wild
Epic is the best way to describe this movie. It is about Christopher McCandless and his tryst with the Alaskan wilderness, adapted from Jon Krakauer’s intriguing novel of the same name. In his pursuit of joy in communion with nature, McCandless abandons his parents and a life of privilege, leaving you feeling the same kind of yearning. In itself, Into The Wild feels as if it has fulfilled the desire for freedom.
The Truman Show
There is no doubt that watching this movie will leave you wondering whether your reality and the life you lead are real. An intelligently-conceived satire, The Truman Show revolves around Truman Burbank, whose life has actually been a reality TV show since he came in this world. It depicts a character who challenges a media-made world that is impoverished – and ultimately escapes from – this contrived world.
Crash
Crash brings out the nuances and complexities of human nature in what appears on the surface to be a quite jarring portrayal of racial tension in America after 9/11. In an exploration of prejudice, this film reveals the diverse shades of human personality. Providing a strikingly accurate portrait of stereotypes, Crash will make you reconsider your assumptions about people.
The Shawshank Redemption
Hope is at the center of The Shawshank Redemption. Its plot is centered around Andy Dufresne, who is incarcerated for 19 years at Shawshank Prison before his perseverance helps him escape. As Andy escapes from prison, you realize the importance of perseverance and faith. Afatre all, the only way to survive is either to “get busy living or to get busy dying”.
Waking Life
Waking Life is a fantastic film with a great deal of philosophical content. Throughout the animation, a number of subjects are illustrated vividly, such as reality, free will, anarchy, suicide, and cinema, as the protagonist stumbles through a dreamlike state. There is no doubt that Richard Linklater’s animated masterpiece will leave you intrigued by its eerie soundtrack and beautifully crafted animation.
The story revolves around an arrogant TV weather man (Bill Murray) who lives in a time loop that repeats the same day repeatedly. What’s the worst part? No one else seems to recall anything about yesterday’s events – only he! This time loop is initially used for his own benefit. However, he starts to rethink his priorities and life after a while.
It’s an interesting movie. This movie doesn’t care about the reason behind the time loop, so don’t worry about it. You don’t have to worry about the fact that it’s an old movie (released in 1993). In your first viewing of Groundhog Day, you may not understand its deep messages, and how you interpret it is completely up to you. Rather, the movie instructs you implicitly by observing and interpreting the lessons it’s trying to convey.
Take note of Phil Connors’ reactions throughout the movie and observe how they change over time. Observe how his reactions change other people’s reactions. He relives each day, but he changes his motivations and thus his reactions throughout the film as he realizes he’s resigned to it.
Pay It Forward
A young boy, who is 11 years old, starts a project to spread kindness and compassion. There is no price to pay for wishful thinking, even though selfishness may overtake altruism in the real world. This movie inspires you to try and pay-it-forward to others and makes you hope for a better world.
Dead Poets Society
As Robin Williams’ best work, Dead Poets Society portrays the conflict between realism and romanticism, as well as the conflict between conservative and traditional values. As a true inspiration, this film will challenge your thinking about social and political norms. You should dream and pursue your ambitions without being lazy, as Dead Poets Society inspires you to do so.
Life Is Beautiful
The movie Life Is Beautiful depicts the extent to which parents will go to protect their children from life’s traumatic events and show them that life is beautiful regardless. It is purely a comedy in the first half, while it is a tear-filled comedy in the second half.
Fight Club
In its best possible way, Fight Club is a movie plagued by madness, David Fincher’s groundbreaking adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. As a result of a projection of his subconscious, the insomniac protagonist resorts to violence and terrorism to feel something. Fight Club is a roller coaster ride that makes you question politics and question consumerism’s dehumanizing effects.
Conclusion
Laughter, tears, and even cheering are all part of their charm. Of course, movies! It is inspiring to see the underdogs overcome adversity and difficulties to achieve extraordinary goals. Inspiration is something we all need. Modern competition can sometimes make us tired and want to give up when we’re competing neck-to-neck. These movies, however, can give us a glimpse into ourselves and can, in fact, be used as a source of inspiration. This list won’t be just any casual evening watch, so do watch movies from this list.
