Shahrukh Khan was always the first choice of Rajkumar Hirani and he collaborated with him even before writing the script of Dunki.
Rajkumar Hirani is one of the best directors in India who has completed 20 years in the film industry. The great director is known for the best storytelling that contains a hidden social message. From Munna Bhai M.B.B.S to Dunki, Rajkumar Hirani has given 7 blockbuster films to the world that are counted among the best Indian films ever made.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, he disclosed he always wanted to work with Shahrukh Khan since his college days. But when he completed his graduation, SRK had become a big star and it took 20 years for him to approach the King Khan of Bollywood. In another interview, he revealed he tried to approach him for Munna Bhai but it didn’t work out.
Since then SRK has been in the mind of Rajkumar Hirani and they mutually decided to work together one day for sure.

How did Rajkumar Hirani Approach SRK for Dunki?
Recently, in an interview when the reporter asked Rajkumar Hirani about how did you approach SRK. He replied that he had already decided to work with SRK even before writing the script. SRK was supposed to be the lead in Munna Bhai but for some reason, they failed to team up. After that, they met numerous times and talked about working together but wouldn’t collaborate because Rajkumar Hirani makes some selected films only.
Once they met after the release of Sanju at Mannat and SRK convinced him by saying “Dekho Sir, Ab bahut ho gaya hai, aapki bhi umar kuch kam nahi ho rahi hai aur mai bhi 50s mei aa chuka hu. Abhi ek film kar leni chaiye, Budhe bankr kya sath mei kaam karegy.”
Then, Rajkumar Hirani narrated 2-3 stories that were in his mind. SRK liked one of them and he started working on it. Rajkumar Hirani visited Punjab numerous times and he wrote the whole story in front of SRK; they met daily and discussed the script. Therefore, it is clear that the director-actor duo wanted to work together for a long time and their dream came true with Dunki.
