This movie is based on true events which happened approximately 30- 32 years ago. So, the story revolves around a Kuwait-based businessman who helped many Indians to reach India when Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Airlift- Storyline Ranjit Katyal as Akshay Kumar is a Kuwait based businessman who lives with his wife Amrita and daughter Simu. He always disrespects India and introduced himself as Kuwaiti. On an unfortunate day, Ranjit’s friend calls him and informs him that Iraq has invaded Kuwait. Ranjit plans to leave Kuwait but when he reaches the checkpoint, Iraqi soldiers stop him and shoot Nair.
Iraqi soldiers take him to the Emir’s palace where he meets Major Khalaf bin Zayd who informs him that he saved Ranjit and his family earlier. Furthermore, he tries to save Ranjit and his family because of past relationships. Then, Ranjit goes to the Indian Embassy where he finds that approximately 1,70,000 Indians are captured in Kuwait and also the Kuwait government fled into exile.
Iraqi forces raid Ranjit’s mansion and fortunately his wife and daughter escape from there and go to his office. On the other hand, Ranjit convinces his friend to set up a camp for 500 Indians to help them. Moreover, Ranjit plans to help all the Indians and not act selfishly. Ranjit gets to know that the Indian Embassy in Kuwait has been invaded by the soldiers so he calls the Indian External Affairs Ministry, Sanjiv Kohli, and asks for their help.
Moreover, the camp which was set up earlier gets looted by Iraqi soldiers. Ranjit discusses everything with Major Khalaf bin Zayd. He apologizes and informs Ranjit that President Saddam has permitted Indians to leave but there is no one to help. Ranjit goes to Baghdad but returns sadly as there is no one and no way to help.
A foreign minister, Tariq Aziz informs Ranjit that one merchant ship is about to reach there and all the Indians can go back in that ship only. Well, the plan turns out to be a flop when the UN embargo tells the ship is not permitted to enter Iraq or leave Iraq. Everyone gets disappointed. Furthermore, Kohli asks Air India to help all the captured people and bring them back to India.
Well, the plan turns out to be successful. When Indians try to leave Kuwait, Ranjit meets other soldiers at a checkpoint and they stop them as they don’t have Ids and passports. Ranjit’s convoy outnumbers Iraqi soldiers and leaves. All of them reach Jordan where Air India planes and Indian Airlines wait for the refugees so that they fly back home. All the Indians salute Ranjit for his bravery while Ranjit feels guilty as in the past he always disrespected Tricolour.
