Anurag Kashyap is back with a new age love story in Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta in lead roles.
Anurag Kashyap’s latest offering, ‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’, was released worldwide on 3rd February 2023. It had its world premiere at the Marrakech Film Festival 2022 and its Asian premiere at the Hainan Island International Film Festival. Starring Alaya F, seen in the Freedy movie, and the newcomer Karan Mehta in double roles, the musical drama received mixed reviews from the audience.
The Storyline of The Movie ‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’ The movie opens with two unrequited stories running parallel to each other, and you can’t help but draw a connection between the two.
On the one hand, there are carefree and unbothered Yakub and Amrita from a small town in Himachal; on the other hand, there is a straight-faced and introverted Harmeet with a confident young woman Ayesha.
Yakub and Amrita leave their house to attend DJ Mohabbat’s concert, which will be held after a week on Holi. Amrita’s parents filed a complaint of love jihad against Yakub and circulated their pictures in newspapers and news channels. But Yakub is unbothered, and his only mission is to take Amrita to the concert.
Hiding from her family, they land in a locked bungalow and decide to stay there. On the arrival of the owners of the bungalow, Yakub charms the old couple, and they let them stay there happily. Yakub likes Amrita too much, and he is elated to be in her company. However, his happiness is extremely short-lived as Amrita decides to go back to her house when she looks at her father crying on the television.
She assures Yakub to come along as she will handle his father and ask him to take the complaint back. However, Yakub is aware of the severity of the situation. He decides to leave for Chandigarh but is shot dead by Ayesha’s brother at the bus stop.
In the parallel universe of Ayesha and Harmeet, Ayesha is the one to pursue the reluctant Harmeet. His career mentor warns Harmeet to stay away from Ayesha as she belongs to a very affluent Pakistani family and doesn’t have any goals in life. However, he has a goal and should focus on it.
Harmeet couldn’t escape Ayesha’s charisma for long and eventually opened up to her. Ayesha and Harmeet have sex, but he isn’t aware of her being underage, as on their first meeting, Ayesha lied to him about her age. This leads to Ayesha’s father pressing charges of rape against Harmeet. Harmeet is imprisoned for three years! During his jail term, he was abused by the inmates, but he finds the strength within himself to toughen up and give his bullies a befitting reply.
On the day of his release, Ayesha comes to see him, but enraged, Harmeet doesn’t speak to her and asks her to die as a favor to him and her dad. Fate plays its part, and Ayesha has an accident while returning from Harmeet’s apartment and dies on the spot.
The movie ends with Harmeet and Amrita at a DJ Mohabbat concert, shocked to see each other! While both the stories seem unrelated in the beginning, there are two connections between the two; one is DJ Mohabbat, and the other is Harmeet’s grandparents.
Amrita and Harmeet are fans of DJ Mohabbat. While Yakub and Amrita are on their hiding spree from Amrita’s family, the bungalow they hide belongs to Harmeet’s grandparents, and the story that the old lady narrates is of Harmeet’s parents.
