Diljit Dosanjh is once again making the headlines with his latest release Jodi . The movie marked the highest-grossing Punjabi film at the US box office to date. Jodi has crossed the 20 crore mark at the box office worldwide and has doubled the money of the makers within a week.
Actress Nimrat Khaira can be seen opposite Diljit. The movie was released on May 5 after getting postponed for a long time. The movie was initially set to release in 2019 but had to be postponed to June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was again postponed due to the pandemic and finally released this month.
Though the movie had a slow start at the domestic box office, its global performance has left the fans enthralled. The makers were concerned about the movie’s performance after Diljit’s recent Coachella controversy .
Jodi is based on the real-life story of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife Amarjot Kaur. The duo successfully redefined the Punjabi folk music culture. Chamkila used to write and sing about topics that were widely considered taboo in the 1980s.
The couple got married after facing many obstacles in society. But their lives were shortlived as they were murdered just before one of their performances on 8 March 1988. Their death still remains an unsolved mystery.
