Gauri Shinde, Dear Zindagi, and Chup fame director first came into the limelight with the movie English Vinglish. It is the story of ‘Shashi’ a middle-aged woman who is loved immensely but not respected enough by her husband and kids. One thing is for sure, towards the end, you will feel inspired by her story.
Needless to say, Sridevi shone in the role of Shashi. As Shashi, she gave hope to thousands of Indian women that anything is possible and age is in fact just a number when it comes to changing your life around!
The Storyline of The Movie ‘English Vinglish’
Shashi is a housewife with exceptional cooking skills; she sells laddus in her home-run business endeavor. She is appreciated for her cooking by everyone around her, but otherwise, she is taken for granted and mocked for her poor English skills by her husband, Satish, and daughter, Sapna. Limiting Shashi to the belief that cooking is her one and only talent!
However, Shashi’s story is about to change massively with the invitation of her niece, Radha’s wedding in New York. Shashi had to leave for New York alone due to the busy schedules of her husband and kids. Anxious Shashi land in New York and faces an embarrassing situation at a coffee shop because of her poor English. This incident was her wake-up call, and she decided to enroll in a four-week English class secretly.
There she meets people from different regional and cultural backgrounds, which broadens her horizon about life. As one would expect, Shashi befriended all of them with her charming personality and, of course, her cooking.

Meanwhile, Shashi’s family arrives earlier than expected; she is unable to take her classes; hence she asks Radha to inform her teacher, Mr. David, of her plan to discontinue.
On reaching there, Radha gets to know that to obtain her certificate Shashi needs to clear a 5-minute speech test, and the date of the test coincides with the wedding. Radha invites David and others to the wedding and requests him to conduct Shashi’s test at the wedding.
At the wedding, Satish is bewildered when Shashi introduces him to many people with diverse backgrounds; he sees a different Shashi in their presence. Cut to Shashi’s speech, she spoke of the family being a safe environment and not a place where either of the members feels disrespected and ignored. Family gives love and respect while empowering you instead of draining you! The movie ends with Satish and Sapna realizing their mistakes and apologizing to Shashi.
But what you find when you look at Shashi is beyond all of this; you can see the birth of Shashi 2.0, who is confident, respects herself, knows her worth, and is sure that she would never let anyone take her for granted or disrespect her ever again.
