The Storyline of the Movie “Karthik Calling Karthik” Karthik Calling Karthik is a story of an introvert named Karthik, portrayed by Farhan Akhtar ( also seen in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Toofan
Karthik’s character carries a childhood trauma where he was always troubled by his elder brother, Kumar. His parents were of no help as they never believed him. Kumar one day took Karthik to a well and tried to drown him. Karthik escaped from the situation, but accidentally, his brother fell into the well and died. Karthik couldn’t help but blame himself for his brother’s unfortunate death.
Shonali Mukherji, played by Deepika Padukone , is Karthik’s coworker. Karthik secretly admires Shonali, but his introverted nature holds him back from even introducing himself to her. His lonesome life gets even more tiring when he is ridiculed by his boss. He feels that he can not continue living this miserable life and decides to commit suicide.
Just when he is about to take his life, Karthik receives a call from a stranger who introduces himself as Karthik and sounds exactly like Karthik himself. The stranger convinces Karthik that he can also achieve everything in his life and guides him through the dark.
This stranger then becomes Karthik’s ally and helps him navigate through life. Karthik eventually starts performing better at his workplace and wins Shonali’s heart.
The twist comes when Karthik tells Shonali and his therapist about this mysterious caller. The caller gets mad at Karthik as he had warned him not to share anything about him with anyone. He threatens Karthik that if he is capable of helping Karthik, then he can also make his life a living hell. That is what happens. He gets thrown out of his office, and Shonali abandons him.
Afterward, the whole plot is about how Karthik tries to escape from this mysterious caller. He resorts to extreme measures and decides to book tickets without knowing the destination himself. He cuts himself off from everyone and makes sure he never uses a cell phone or any other medium for communication.
While he starts leading a pretty decent life in Cochin, his boss insists he gets a landline connection. However, he obliges but goes to extreme lengths not to know the number himself. But all his efforts go in vain when one day, he receives a call from the same stranger who now threatens to kill him.
While all this is going on, Karthik’s therapist tries to reach Shonali and reveals that Karthik is schizophrenic. His disorder makes it hard for him to socialize, as he can’t differentiate between reality and his imagination. He has had this disorder since childhood, and the brother he had and this mysterious caller are all his imagination.
Karthik gets emotionally frustrated by all this that he once again tries to kill himself, but Shonali arrives at the right time to save him. After Shonali realizes everything, they get back together. Karthik gets help from his therapist regarding his condition and tries to lead a normal life with Shonali.
