However, the list of upcoming Hindi movies might change depending on the change in the release date as per the censor certification and also due to other professional adjustments. But, not only the release ‘date’ , the concept of movie release ‘day’ has also changed with time.
So, before listing the upcoming movies, let’s have a look at the reasons behind the change in Movie release day . If you ask anyone Friday is the best day of the week. It is the last day of working after that we get weekends. When it comes to the movie release, the maximum number of Bollywood films get released on Friday . The reasons behind this could be these-
The weekend release is a Crowd-puller and one could notice that lots of Walk-ins to the Movie hall on Weekends than other days.
There’s a belief behind the release of the movie on Friday that the day belongs to goddess Lakshmi in India. So, releasing movies on this would blessed producers with good wealth.
Another reason is, in earlier days, people used to get their Weekly wages on Friday and they love to spend their Weekends in Cinema halls.
Also, if we look at the commercial aspect, the screening fee that producers have to pay to multiplex owners is higher for days other than Friday.
But nowadays, the movies are being released on other days of the week as well such as on Thursdays. Also, there is a big competition for release dates around the 6 major holidays. Every year producer’s fight for the release dates falling on the most lucrative Eid, followed by Diwali, Christmas, Independence Day, Republic Day and the first Friday after IPL.
Why Change in Movie Release Date?
The idea behind this is to capture the attention of as many viewers as possible in the first few days of release so that the good reviews about the movie get viral through the media, word of mouth and social network. This helps establish the movie to run successfully for many days.
All the major stars book these release dates in advance. It is mainly because the model of releasing movies has completely changed with time. Now, the release dates are announced 1 -2 years in advance even before the movie has started it’s shooting or finalize its star casts as compared to the earlier model when the release was announced only when the movie was completed.
Bollywood has also changed itself a lot with every passing year in many aspects. Let’s have a look at it without wasting any further time.
Overview of Bollywood Cinema & its Interesting Facts:
Indian cinema has come a long way. The Bollywood industry is now the largest film industry in the world and one of the most popular as well.
In India, people speak a total of twenty-four different languages. Therefore, to cater to the needs of different language speaking people, films are made in various other languages, and each language’s industry carries its own name like ‘Tollywood’ and ‘Kollywood’. But when it comes to the world-wide presence, box-office sales and far-reaching influence, Bollywood’s industry exceeds India’s other film industries. ‘Bollywood’ is basically something, we’re all curious to know about.
Bollywood gained huge popularity in the 1970s when India overtook America as the world’s largest film producer and became popular in the world. But still, there are so many misconceptions about the Bollywood industry in the minds of even hardcore cinephiles that before knowing what Bollywood is, it becomes necessary to describe what not Bollywood is.
Many believe that Bollywood is synonymous with the Indian filmmaking industry. No! It is a name for the country’s Hindi film industry based in Mumbai. The Bollywood industry has a remarkable history of producing a ton of movies as well as showcasing different spheres of Indian life, in different themes such as thriller, comedy, romance, horror, and drama.
And, if you thought that you knew everything about Bollywood, then you’re wrong! Keeping aside the hard work and efforts put by the cast and crew of a film, there’s a lot more to a Bollywood movie that what we see as an audience. The industry behind the making process of these movies is full of gossip, glamour, and secrets! Let’s look at some of them:
The industry enjoys a sentimental appeal through its unique style.
Stars, rather than plots, were often the driving force behind the Bollywood films.
The industry’s film’s standard features continued to be big fight scenes, formulaic storylines, choreographed song-and-dance routines, larger-than-life heroes and full of emotion-melodrama.
In terms of the number of feature films produced and distributed in a year, the industry has been on consistent growth.
Started in the 1930s, the industry produces around 1000 films every year – almost double the output of Hollywood.
In the year 2018 alone, the number of digital feature films released across the country was over 1800.
Talking about the last year, 2019 belonged to Akshay Kumar, he became the first actor to see his 2019 films’ box office collection crossing the 10 billion benchmark. In fact, he earned a whopping 65 million dollars, putting him amongst the top five best-paid actors across the globe.
The reason for such a high number of films produced every year and the industry’s huge growth is maybe that, in India, a large market is readily available for the Bollywood films , movie-goers throng cinema halls, be it the old-school single-screen theaters or the modernized multiplexes.
Change in Bollywood & New Trends:
We all have witnessed that, there’s a huge change in the Bollywood industry in the representation of films from then (the 1950s) to now (21st century), be it story-line, representation of women or star-cast, etc. change is there in every aspect of Bollywood. That’s true!
Earlier movies were considered as a one-way communication process. They were made with the sole purpose of entertainment with the intention to distract us from our monotonous problems, in a way providing relaxation to everyone watching it.
Movies of that time intensify on some aspects of life such as romance, comedy, and war, etc. But now, a new flow has come into the industry. Movies are now more than the simple source of entertainment.
Industry’s directors and actors are more interested in picking a socially relevant topic that could benefit the society as well as the individuals.
A good film with a socially relevant subject does more than entertaining or filling seats at the cinema. It has the power to change the individual mind and society as a whole. I believe more than the efforts of the government, films can definitely create huge awareness about social issues in a creative way to bring a change in society.
India has so many topics to discuss, like women’s empowerment, literacy, poverty, use of toilets (health& hygiene), India’s achievements and cast discrimination, etc.
Surprisingly, many of the latest Bollywood movies such as Badhaai Ho, Andhadhun, Super 30, and Newton, etc. were blockbuster hits, even though they were based on unconventional subjects. This change only shows that the audience is also accepting these movies.
Now, we can proudly say that the ‘Golden Age of Indian Cinema’ is definitely coming back.
Other than the movie theme/subject, there has been a changing trend in the representation of women in films as well. The women-centric films no longer gravitate around a man. They present the female character as an educated and often professional woman who enjoys her sexuality, has the means to travel internationally and can balance tradition with her place in global modernity. You can see this change in recent Bollywood movies like Queen, Mary Kom and Gulaabi Gang, etc.
Looking further about the other changes in Bollywood, we can see that the phenomenon of launching the established star kids into the industry in heavily promoted films continues like Sara Ali Khan in Simbha(2018), Ishaan Khattar in Dhadak (2018) and Ananya Pandey in Student of the year 2( 2019), etc.
Also one can notice an interesting new trend which involves a greater number of sequels being made. These include Shah Rukh Khan’s Don series, Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB series, Salman Khan’s Tiger series, and Amir Khan’s Dhoom series, as well as Kangana Ranaut’s Tanu Weds Manu series.
Other than that some interesting linkages are happening that play with the traditional concept of the sequel, like director Rohit Shetty’s police action films Singham, Singham Returns, and Simmba. His upcoming hindi film sequel ‘Sooryavanshi’, touted for a 2020 release, for the very first time, is expected to bring together the other actors from the first three films.
Witnessing all these changes, one can say that the scale at which Bollywood – a mammoth powerhouse of industry – is evolving in response to changing movie themes in the subject like technology, politics, culture, and society is surely very impressive. In the future, it will be fascinating to see what impact of these Bollywood significant changes will have on India itself.
