‘Shiv Shakti Balboa’ is the debut feature film of the director and writer Ajayan Venugopalan. Ajayan has written many heartwarming characters in the movie. Still, it is the veterans Anupam Kher last seen in the successful movie Kashmir Files and Neena Gupta, featured in Goodbye and Panchayat that steal the show with their stellar performances.
Though the movie revolves around the theme of aging parents and how not every parent wishes to spend their post-retirement life in the comfort of their home, it also showcases the struggles of Indian immigrants in a foreign land.
The Storyline of The Movie ‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’ Shiv Shankar Shastri is a retired bank officer who trains boxers. He moves to Ohio to live with his son, Rahul, post his retirement. Shiv’s son lives in Ohio with his wife, Alka, and two sons, Arjun and Adivath, happy about Shiv’s arrival.
Initially, Shiv was also elated to spend time with his grandsons, son, and daughter-in-law, but soon, he was fed up with the monotonous days.
He daydreams about the stairs in Philadelphia that Sylvester Stallone climbed in the climax of Rocky. He asks Alka and Rahul to take him to Philadelphia, but they are too busy in their lives to make time for an outing.
Being a Rocky fanatic visiting those stairs is not only his dream but also a wish that he wants to fulfill before he dies at any cost. Hence, when the realization that visiting that place is a far-fetched dream kicks in, it makes him sad!
Hence, he takes it upon himself to fulfill his desire along with his newfound friend, Elsa, who is an Indian housemaid trapped in an Indian household by her employers. While Shiv wants to go to Philadelphia, Elsa wants to elope from her employer’s house and move back to India.
With different motives, both of them decide to help each other in fulfilling their respective desires. However, what began as an innocent wish took an adventurous turn which was way beyond both of their imaginations.
