The film Thalaivii is based on the life of Indian actress and politician Jayalalithaa, who starred as herself in the movie. Kangana Ranaut starred as Jayalalithaa, and Arvind Swami played M G Ramachandran, who co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Madhan Karky (Tamil) and Rajat Arora (Hindi). Thalaivii is produced by Vibri Motion Pictures and Shailesh R Singh of Karma Media and Entertainment. Other actors in the film include Nassar, Bhagyashree, Raj Arjun, Madhoo, Thambi Ramaiah, Shamna Kasim, and Samuthirakani. After 15 years since “Minnale” in 2004, music director G V Prakash Kumar collaborated with singer Suchitra for the first time.
In 2019, Jayalalithaa’s birth anniversary was celebrated with the film’s release. Originally titled Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi, the makers later chose to release it under the title Thalaivi in Hindi. Production began on 10 November 2019 and finished in December 2020. With the increase in COVID-19 cases and a lockdown in Maharashtra, the release date of Thalavi was postponed to 10 September 2021.
The movie’s budget was 100 crore, and it had earned approx five crores in its 1st week. Upon its release, the film received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Kangana Ranaut and Swamy but criticised the screenplay. Several publications ranked the movie on their year-end lists of best films of 2021.
Thalaivi Movie: Storyline
In 1989, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was questioned by opposition leader J. Jayalalithaa(Jaya) about corruption charges and eavesdropping levelled against her party. She demands his resignation and upholds former chief minister MGR as someone who indeed served the people. However, the opposition questions her relationship with MGR, resulting in a brawl after Jaya is slapped. Some MLAs from the ruling party attempt to disrobe Jaya; comparing herself to Draupadi, she pledges that she would return to the session only after becoming the chief minister.
The film went into a flashback in 1965. MGR was at the peak of his film career, and producer R.M. Veerappan had fired Saroja Devi due to rumours of an affair with MGR. Veerappan also destroyed all traces of her character in a forthcoming film to preserve MGR’s reputation as a “god.” Furthermore, 16-year-old Jayalalithaa replaced Savitri in the film under pressure from her mother, Sandhya, who had been an actress herself. However, she took a softer stance once she realised her mother only wanted her to succeed in the industry.
To know the full story of Jayalalithaa’s life you have to watch the full movie.
